Secrets of Angkor – Small Tour

We will then take you to the most iconic temples of the archeological site, to see the Bayon Temple. Captivating Ta Prom Temple where roots are encrusting in the ancient stones, to finish by the magnificent Angkor Wat. But in between we will take you to some hidden corners to admire carved faces.

Your journey begins at the photogenic South Gate of Angkor Thom, where rows of gods and demons line the causeway in a dramatic cosmic tug of war, leading to the grand gate crowned by four majestic faces looking toward the cardinal directions.

Passing through the gate, discover the monumental Bayon Temple, renowned for its 54 towers adorned with more than 200 enigmatic smiling faces. Standing at the heart of Jayavarman’s capital, Angkor Thom, Bayon’s most distinctive feature is its multitude of serene stone faces—four on each tower, facing the four directions—believed to be modelled on King Jayavarman VII and representing The Buddha. These remarkable towers rise from the upper terrace and cluster around the temple’s central peak.

Continue to the Terrace of the Leper King, where hidden and extraordinary carved faces reveal another fascinating layer of Angkor’s artistry.

Later, explore Ta Prom Temple, preserved in its natural state to reflect how much of Angkor appeared upon its rediscovery in the 18th century. Here, gigantic roots and branches intertwine with ancient stone walls, forming a natural roof over the temple’s structures and creating one of the most iconic and atmospheric sites in Cambodia.

Experience a Monk Ablution Ceremony, a sacred ritual in Buddhist tradition symbolizing purification, renewal, and devotion. This meaningful ceremony often involves the ritual washing or bathing of monks, Buddha statues, or sacred objects with water infused with fragrant flowers or herbal essences.

In the afternoon, visit the legendary Angkor Wat, one of the largest Hindu temples in the world and the most famous temple in the Angkor complex. Covering a total area of 81 hectares, it was instructed by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century and took an estimated 37 years to complete.

Uniquely facing west, Angkor Wat was dedicated to the god Vishnu. Its original religious motifs were derived from Hinduism, breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings. It was built as the king’s state temple and capital city.

In 1177, approximately 27 years after the death of Suryavarman II, Angkor was sacked by the Chams, the traditional enemies of the Khmer.

The empire was later restored by a new king, Jayavarman VII, who established a new capital and state temple—Angkor Thom and the Bayon, respectively—a few kilometers north. Dedicated to Buddhism, influenced by his new wife Indratevi, a devout Mahayana Buddhist, Angkor Wat was gradually converted into a Buddhist site, and many Hindu sculptures were replaced by Buddhist art.

Secrets of Angkor – Big Tour

During this tour we will adapt to your feeling, however we will propose you the visit of at least 2 main temples in the morning: Preah Khan, Neak Pean, and in the afternoon, Ta Som, Pre Rup and Bantey Kdei.

During the morning, begin your journey at Preah Khan Temple, constructed by King Jayavarman VII in 1191 and dedicated to his father. This remarkable temple blends concepts of Buddhism, Hinduism, Animism, and personal cult under his reign. Preah Khan is one of the few temples in the Angkor area to retain its original Sanskrit name, “Nagara Jayagri,” meaning “country which is protected by a sacred sword.” A stone stele discovered in 1939 reveals an intriguing detail—that the king’s sacred sword was forged from 21 different metals.

Continue to Neak Pean Temple, built by King Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century and dedicated to Bodhisattva Avalokesvara. This sacred site served as a place of healing, where people across the kingdom came to cure physical and mental sickness, cleanse sins, and seek good fortune aligned with the astrological line. Neak Pean, meaning “Nagas Intertwining Tails” in Khmer, takes its name from two entwined Nagas, with the right representing the male and the left the female (Nagin).

Then explore Ta Som Temple, constructed by King Jayavarman VII (1181–1220) in honour of his sister. Ta Som is one of three temples built by the king, alongside Presk, dedicated to his father and located on the western side of the lake, and Neak Pean, the baptism temple for all people standing in the middle of the lake. Ta Som itself is located on the western side of Jayatataka.

During the afternoon, visit Pre Rup Temple, built in 961 ADS in the middle of the 10th century by Khmer King Rajendravarman II. According to local belief, these structures served as a crematorium, while French scholars believe they functioned as libraries. Due to similar buildings constructed on both sides of the causeway to the main temple, they are referred to as libraries.

Continue to Sras Srang, originally constructed by King Rajendravarman II in the 10th century, then restored and enlarged by King Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century. Known as the Royal Bath in Khmer, Sras Srang remains one of Angkor’s most serene and historic reservoirs.

End the day at Banteay Kdei, or Prasat Banteay Kdei, meaning “A Citadel of Chambers,” also known as the “Citadel of Monks’ Cells.” Built in the mid-12th to early 13th centuries AD during the reign of Jayavarman VII, this Buddhist monastic complex was occupied by monks at various intervals over the centuries until the 1960s, offering a fascinating glimpse into Angkor’s enduring spiritual heritage.

The temple is extremely popular with tourists, and have led to its being widely praised as a “precious gem”, or the jewel of Khmer art.

It has been speculated that the temple’s modern name. is due to the many devatas carved into the red sandstone walls. The temple’s modern name means the citadel of the women, or citadel of beauty is probably related to the intricacy of the bas reliefs carvings found on the walls and the tiny dimensions of the buildings themselves.

Upon returning you might take the opportunity to visit the “Citadel of Women”, called Bantey Srei Temple, a charming and extraordinarily carved temple dedicated to Shiva.

Begin your journey at Kbal Spean – The River of a Thousand Lingas, where an easy jungle trek of approximately 50 minutes leads you to one of Angkor’s most remarkable sacred sites. Along the 1.5 km uphill walk, discover Hindu sculptures carved into the river’s granite banks more than a thousand years ago. Though the path can be slippery in wet conditions, bamboo handrails and wooden steps support the more difficult sections. The climb is well worth the effort, rewarded with beautiful views over the valley below. Suitable footwear is recommended, and carrying water is advised for the walk.

Continue to Phnom Kulen, located 50 km northeast of Siem Reap town, one of Cambodia’s most famous mountains and considered by local people to be the country’s most spirited mountain. Phnom Kulen is also the source of the Siem Reap River and holds deep historical significance. In ancient times, particularly under the reign of King Jayavarman II during the Angkor period, it served as the capital city of the Khmer Empire.

At the summit, visit the revered statue of Preah Ang Thom (Reclining Buddha), a sacred place where many come to worship. Phnom Kulen is also renowned for its refreshing waterfall, where visitors can relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Upon returning, you may wish to stop at Banteay Srei Temple, a small yet enchanting pink sandstone Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva God. Considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkor, Banteay Srei is celebrated for some of the finest and best-preserved stone carvings you will ever see.

Secrets of the Lake – Kompong Khleang

This lake is an important source of life and livelihood to this region and creates a floodplain that enriches the soil of the surrounding areas too. This means that often the villagers that live in the stilt houses on the lake fish in the rainy season and farm in the dry season.

Secrets of the Lake – Kampong Phluk

This village exists almost exclusively for fishing and related activities. Houses are built on stilts up to 10m high, and the village is surrounded by flooded forest.

The community largely depends on fishing for survival, primarily shrimp, spending Cambodia’s wet season (May – October) fishing.

Many houses and buildings are constructed on stilts ranging from 6 m to 9 m to accommodate the change in the water level.

Kampong Phluk and Roluos Group

Among the “Roluos Group” of temples there are some of the earliest permanent structures built by Khmer. They mark the beginning of classical period of Khmer civilization, dating from the late 9th century. Some were totally built with bricks, others partially with laterite or sandstone At present it is composed by three major temples: Bakong, Lolei, and Preah Ko, along with the smaller Prasat Prei Monti. At both Bakong and Lolei there are contemporary Theravada Buddhists Monastries.
